Opening a list item in a new tab

Here, it is a common practice to not only open the new tab but redirect the user to it.

This is indeed a very annoying mistake as the element is part of a whole list, the user most probably tries to open multiple items on the side using the visible information from the list.

The user will then leave the list and dig for information tab by tab, closing the not-relevant ones to shorten the scope of the search/workspace.

If your service list places, law documents, or complex processes, your default option should rather be to open only than open and redirect as the resulting behavior will be to iteratively open and go back, rather than open on the side before going on with the new iteration of prioritize, sort or access each tab opened on the side.

The only case where someone will want to be redirected to the new tab is if that person knows what they need is actually located there, without the will to close the list tab, this lead to only one more action for that use case against a lot more “go back” actions in the most relevant behavior of someone struggling to parse and find the information they want in a list.
